Should I take a folic acid supplement?
Yes. Research in the past ten years has shown that sufficiently high levels of folic acid in the motherâ??s blood at the time of conception and early pregnancy will help prevent neural tube defects such as spina bifida and hydrocephalus in babies.
What if Iâ??m anaemic?
If you have anaemia it means your heart is overworked and this can affect your baby. If you are prone to anaemia tell your doctor. A blood test would reveal anaemia and it may be necessary to take iron supplements and increase your intake of iron rich foods.
